Giving Back: Helping Handprints

The San Diego Rescue Mission provides shelter and services for many homeless San Diegans, including nearly 60 children. While the Rescue Mission makes sure the kids are fed, clothed, and in school, the downtown-situated facility currently has no outdoor play area. "Living in a hotel environment, the kids really need space to run around," says CEO Herb Johnson. Plans for a playground are well underway, and significant donations have been made by the Association of General Contractors, but the Rescue Mission still needs to raise $100,000 to complete the project. With that goal in mind, they got creative and developed Handprints, a program that gives the children an opportunity to create art that will be auctioned off to raise funds. With the guidance of local artist Christina Conway, 15 children received a special art lesson and created oil pastel drawings. "I started the lesson by reading a children’s book called Frida by Ana Juan. Frida Kahlo went through a lot of hard times growing up, yet her art always came out. It was important for her, therapeutic," says Conway. The kids were inspired, and "all of them immediately knew what they wanted to draw, they all had ideas — they just bloomed." The drawings will be auctioned at a reception on December 6 from 6-8pm at the Park Laurel in San Diego. For more information on attending or making donations, please contact Kelli Adame at the San Diego Rescue Mission.
