SAN DIEGO -- The San Diego Rescue Mission is $10,000 closer to building a playground, thanks to an anonymous donation.
The donation will help transform the top floor of the homeless shelter's parking garage into a playground for children living at the shelter.
More money is needed to finish the project. The mission is still $85,000 short of the $250,000 it needs to complete it.
A public playground is out of reach for many of the younger children, said Herb Johnson, president and CEO of San Diego Rescue Mission.
"There really isn't a place safe for them to be out on the sidewalk or the street -- so the playground is a significantly monumental part of their development -- and that's why we're trying to raise the money," Johnson said.
The San Diego Rescue Mission offers emergency shelter for homeless women and more than 60 children.
