SAN DIEGO RESCUE MISSION SERVES OVER 150
AT ANNUAL EASTER BANQUET
Rear Admiral Len Hering Serves Easter Meal to Region's Homeless
SAN DIEGO - Commander of the Navy Southwest Region Rear Admiral Len Hering was the honorary server today at the San Diego Rescue Mission's Annual Easter Banquet. Over 150 homeless San Diegans attended the dinner, which included over 400 pounds of honey-glazed ham and all the spring trimmings. Guests were also given Easter baskets with articles of clothing and toiletries.
"Easter is a holiday that teaches us we can have new life through Jesus Christ," said Jim Jackson, Jr., head of the Rescue Mission. "The most important thing we can do this spring is let the homeless people of San Diego know we can help them achieve a new life here at the Rescue Mission. This dinner is one way of showing them we care."
Of San Diego County's estimated 9,600 homeless, over 900 are veterans. To reach out to more of San Diego's homeless, the Rescue Mission holds several events each year such as the Easter Banquet to let the homeless know there are programs and people who can help them get their lives back on track.
The Rescue Mission, celebrating its 50th year of service this year, offers emergency shelter for homeless women and children as well as highly effective 12-month programs for men and women that include drug recovery and relapse prevention; job training and continuing education; and "One to One" counseling.
