“Toddler to Tween Treat”

Resident Children at the San Diego Rescue Mission Now Have an Outdoor Playground

THIS Saturday, September 20
5:00 – 6:00 pm

San Diego Rescue Mission
120 Elm Street, downtown San Diego

WHAT:
Generous donations and hard work by the San Diego chapter of the Associated General Contractors will bring smiles and laughter to displaced and confused “little ones,” fleeing domestic violence, abuse, and narcotics.  On Saturday, September 20, the San Diego Rescue Mission will celebrate the grand opening of its new playground for its resident children.  Many of these homeless children will have a safe place to play for the first time at the approximately 3,000 square foot play area, designed by architecture firm Austin Veum Robbins Partners, with landscape architect Dennis Otsuji of ONA, Inc.  The carnival-themed celebration will feature a bounce house, face painting, games for children, an old-fashioned popcorn cart and a lemonade stand.  The program will include a ribbon-cutting ceremony, client testimonies, donor recognition, and San Diego Councilmember Kevin Faulconer.  Major sponsors include Pacific Building Group in conjunction with the Associated General Contractors, San Diego, who donated approximately $200,000 in labor and materials; Las Patronas; and Sycuan Casino.

WHO:
The San Diego Rescue Mission is one of the largest comprehensive rehabilitation centers for the homeless in California.  Each night, The Rescue Mission provides up to 60 battered, homeless, or poor women and children with emergency overnight shelter through its Nueva Vida Haven program.  The program provides them with hot dinners, clean clothes, showers, hygiene products, a play area for children, warm blankets, and hot breakfasts.  Many of these women and families enter the Rescue Mission’s long term recovery program.  The San Diego Rescue Mission is the only major homeless shelter in San Diego that does not receive government funding for its long term rehabilitation programs, and is nationally recognized for its successful programs.  For more information, visit www.sdrescue.org.
