Children and teens are not exempt from suffering, but you can help!

In San Diego, 15% of those experiencing homelessness are families. The Rescue Mission serves single parents with kids, giving them a safe place to grow and thrive.

Our Children's Resource Center serves the emotional and educational needs of the children and their families staying in our emergency shelter or residential program, Mission Academy.

We support parents and healthy child development by:
😀 Building social-emotional resilience and executive functioning skills for children and parents.
👩‍👧 Providing one-on-one parent conference meetings to ensure their child’s behavioral, educational, and emotional success.
📚🖍Encouraging positive engagement with their child to strengthen family bonds.
✏️ Identifying barriers to overcoming academic hardships.

“In every obstacle, there’s an opportunity. In every problem, there’s potential. In every crisis, you can find Christ working.”

Christopher, a 2015 graduate from Mission Academy, spent some time during our recent ceremony encouraging and exhorting our current graduates.

Clean and sober for 8.5 years, Christopher came from a broken home with a parent in prison and found his sense of belonging in a street gang. Addicted to drugs, and living on the street, he hit bottom. That’s when he found the San Diego Rescue Mission.

After graduating, Christopher used the skills he learned at the Mission to become reliant on God. He eventually became a member of the construction labor union and is working as a journeyman. Christopher also recently married the love of his life.

He proclaimed to the graduates, “These are all things I couldn’t have done unless I was sober. I faced some giants in my post-Mission days. You will face giants when you walk out of these doors. If I can conquer these things, so can you! Keeping the shield of faith in position will always keep you on guard before an arrow hits you from the enemy’s ambush.”

Thank you, Christopher, for your wise words, and thank you to our faithful supporters who make these amazing testimonies a reality.

And the award goes to…

Twice a year, at each Rescue Mission graduation, two students who are completing Mission Academy, our 1-yr. residential program, are awarded scholarships. Donors wanted to do more, and these scholarships reflect the generosity and creativity of the community and our contributors.

The Barbara Lee Edwards Scholarship started in the Spring of 2020 and is awarded to a woman to further her education and assist with housing. She is chosen for how she worked her program and the plans she has for her life going forward.

Hip Hip Hooray to Jan-Marie, the recipient of the Barbara Lee Edwards Scholarship. We pray that your education journey is fulfilling and joyful.

We Revive, one of our amazing Corporate Partners, is a local Real Estate company on a mission to revive the world one property at a time. They believe everyone should have a safe place to call home. Last year, they started a scholarship for our male graduates to kick start their new life and assist with securing housing.

This semester’s WeRevive scholarship was awarded to Jesse. Our prayers are with you Jesse as you begin a wonderful new season in your life!

We hit an all-time high!

It was an honor to witness the graduation of 49 Mission Academy students, an SDRM record. Not only have they persevered and overcome homelessness, but they’re also ready to put the past behind them and thrive!

One of our students at Mission Academy just landed a job – praise God!

After semester one, students start their Work Life course. In this class, we train, develop, and equip each student to be ready to engage the workforce with mock interviews, and work-life conflict and resolution scenarios. They learn about communication, soft skills, job retention, and career readiness and start their job-hunting process.

The San Diego Rescue Mission took part in a job fair early this month, and some of our students were in attendance.

One student had an interview and was hired on the spot. She said that this interview was different from others. She said she began to share her faith in God and how she is in a Christian residential rehabilitation program getting her life back on track. The interviewer asked about her past, and our student shared her testimony!!!

Our new South Bay shower trailer made the news!

Community and government leaders came to celebrate the commissioning of the San Diego Rescue Mission’s new mobile shower ministry in South Bay! Our shower trailers bring compassion, dignity, and hope to vulnerable neighbors without homes.

Thanks to those in attendance and our wonderful and compassionate supporters who made it happen.

The Rescue Mission’s CEO, Donnie Dee, is participating in several community prayer services today in honor of The National Day Of Prayer.

He joined the Downtown Fellowship of Churches and Ministries in Ruocco Park and prayed with Oceanside Churches and Community members in Heritage Park.

As we lift each other up in prayer, let’s not forget to pray for our struggling neighbors who live on the streets, and the outreach teams and community that serve them. Pray for their strength, health, protection, and provision.

We continue to pray for the transformation of lives through SDRM’s Mission Academy and other programs and our national and regional leadership as they work hard to provide answers to our nation’s homelessness crisis.

We hope that you are inspired to care for those who are hopeless, homeless, and hungry with compassion and thoughtfulness. Thank you, your prayers and steadfast support change lives.

What does it take to change the life of someone experiencing homelessness?
It’s more than providing immediate needs like food and shelter. It’s about helping each person find their path to healing and self-sufficiency.

Our approach begins with STRATEGIC OUTREACH, a focused effort to meet vulnerable neighbors right where they are – on the streets – through our Mobile Shower Ministry, Walk With Me friendship initiative, and our Street Outreach programs.

Through a relational approach to build trust, we meet their immediate need for shelter at a 30-day NAVIGATION CENTER and provide case management to help them access social services.

Next, they will transition to longer-term housing or our 12-month rehabilitation program, MISSION ACADEMY. Here, we move students forward into long-term life change. Our approach is holistic, trauma-informed, and person-centered, because we believe homelessness is an issue of the heart.

The culmination of their hard work is celebrated with a GRADUATION ceremony – and the entire community is invited to celebrate!

Who better to share the hope of transformation than those once homeless?
Through our ALUMNI AMBASSADOR program, we encourage graduates and empower them to influence those currently experiencing homelessness.
