Born and raised in National City, Carmelo considers this community home. But it was a difficult place to grow up.
As a teen, Carmelo witnessed his older brother go to prison. “It deeply influenced me,” he says. “I quit going to school and started doing all the stuff my family was doing.”
In this toxic environment, Carmelo developed an addiction to drugs and eventually became homeless.
“I used to sleep under bridges… Now I’m teaching youth about Christ.”
A friend who’d been through our long-term program referred Carmelo here. “The staff constantly poured into me,” he says.
Carmelo found the support he needed to live a stable, successful life. “I learned to deal with the pain from my past… so I could be healthy in the long run,” he says.
Today, Carmelo is working as a youth pastor at a thriving local church and pursuing his master’s in divinity. He is married and enjoys being a father to his two young children. “I gave my life to God, and finally have freedom and peace,” he says.
