Meet Chelsea

Chelsea grew up in Poway, an “A” student with a solid upbringing and a bright future. After her high school best friend murdered her own mother, Chelsea’s classmates turned against her friend and Chelsea.

This trauma caused Chelsea a decade-long struggle with mental health issues and addiction to numb her pain. She spiraled out of control until she lost everything and became homeless. Later, she was diagnosed with Schizophrenia and Bipolar Disorder, learning that her biological mother suffered from mental illness.

For five years she survived on the streets. After escaping sex trafficking, Chelsea met a woman who gave her a Bible and told her that God protected her for a reason. Determined to change her life, she came to the Rescue Mission, ready to embrace God.

“I learned how to take care of my mental health. The Rescue Mission gave me so many tools, therapy, trauma care, grief share, and in-house classes that really helped me overcome a lot of barriers and situations.”

Chelsea is a successful graduate of our Mission Academy program. “My testimony is not over. The chapters are still being written. God’s still writing my story.”

Today is officially San Diego Rescue Mission Day in San Diego County!

(We’re not saying you have to celebrate with cake… but we won’t stop you. 🎂😉)

We are honored to be recognized by the County Board of Supervisors for our 70 years of service and life-changing impact, alongside Mission Academy alumnus James Case and our incredible leadership team.

Since 1955, the San Diego Rescue Mission has been a beacon of hope, providing food, shelter, and paths to permanent housing. In 2024 alone, we helped 331 people permanently end their homelessness.

We’re deeply grateful for this recognition and remain committed to serving with compassion and dignity.

Now through May 31, every donation for our neighbors experiencing homelessness will be DOUBLED.

🙏 Today, Ashley—our Associate Director of Church Partnerships —is speaking at the National Day of Prayer at Ruocco Park overlooking the bay, and Porsche Copeland—our Donor Engagement Officer—is sharing at Oceanside’s Day of Prayer.

They’re joining local leaders to lift up our county, our unhoused neighbors 🏙️, and the frontline outreach teams serving those in need with love and care.
