Thanks to you!
“I’m still growing every day.”

When Nora moved to California to help care for her daughter’s children while her daughter served in the military, she never expected that what began as an opportunity to support her family would become a season filled with unexpected struggles.
After a serious car accident left her unable to work, she turned to alcohol to cope. Later, she experienced a traumatic assault that left her fearful and struggling to feel safe. “I was scared to sleep at night, so I started using substances that kept me awake and alert.”
The trauma led Nora into escalating addiction, and she eventually became homeless. She found herself surrounded by people and situations that pulled her further from the life she wanted. “That lifestyle wasn’t me, and I knew I had to get cleaned up.”
Nora walked through the doors of the San Diego Rescue Mission more than once before she was ready to stay, but she never forgot the opportunity that was offered to her. When she finally entered the program sober and committed to recovery, her transformation began.
“I surrendered to God, and He’s made a huge change in me.”
At the Rescue Mission, classes such as anger management helped Nora develop healthier ways to relate to others, and she has rebuilt her confidence and strengthened her faith. “Miracles are happening left and right. I don’t have to worry… Everything’s going to be in God’s timing.”
Today, Nora is making steady progress. She has restored family relationships and moved into housing near her job, where she is supported by a Christian landlord who runs a charity serving “the least of these.” She’s also taking steps toward much-needed hip surgery while continuing to work, remain sober and pay her own way.
She hopes to use her experiences to encourage others. “I still have a good connection with people experiencing homelessness. I believe it’s my calling to work in outreach and share my story.”
This holiday season, Nora is experiencing the gifts of peace and hope for a brighter future. Thank you for helping to make her new beginning possible! “I’m thankful to the Rescue Mission for loving me unconditionally.”
