Hurt to Healed: How You Changed Serenity's Life

Serenity had nowhere to turn. Desperately fleeing an abusive relationship, she ended up homeless. She tried to get her life together, going to school and working, but every time she made progress, she was defeated. When a coworker wrecked her motorcycle — her only means of transportation — she couldn’t get to her job.

No job, no rent. Serenity was running out of options.

Even though her sister was at our Mission Academy residential rehabilitation program, Serenity was hesitant to join her. “I didn’t wanna ask for help,” she said. “My pride was too big. I felt like I could do it by myself.”

Thankfully, her sister’s encouragement and the support from staff members helped her take the step through our doors. Through our person-centric, trauma-informed recovery program, Serenity learned to accept help from others. She began to process the anger she felt as a domestic violence survivor.

“Before coming to the Rescue Mission, I was angry,” she said. “Since I’ve been here, I’ve learned to deal with my anger.”

Because of you, Serenity discovered that healing happens within a community, or, as she put it, with “people you can depend on in time of need.”

“They may be friends, and not family by blood, but they’re my family,” she said. “We’ll probably be family for the rest of my life.”

Serenity isn’t the only one fleeing abuse and searching for a safe haven. When you give today, you help provide safe shelter and life-changing recovery programs where neighbors like Serenity can find hope, healing, and freedom.
