Volunteers at the Rescue Mission provide valuable services to our residents and receive the satisfaction of personally helping homeless people regain productive lives.
So we can best assist you in finding an appropriate and fulfilling volunteer opportunity, please take a look at the list below. To receive more information on a particular opportunity just click on its title.
Once you've found a couple of possibilities, contact our volunteer coordinator at volunteers@sdrescue.org and she'll set up an interview with you. After that, he'll place you in a rewarding volunteer opportunity that helps the special men, women and children we serve.

FOOD
POSITION: Men's Center Food Service Volunteer
PURPOSE OF JOB: Assist staff with preparing meals
LENGTH OF COMMITMENT NECESSARY: Negotiable 3 Months
DEFINITION OF DUTIES: Prepare and serve meals, including salads for the homeless men in our programs. Set-up dining room as well as cleaning up work and storage areas.
QUALIFICATIONS: Kitchen skills, regular volunteers must have Food Handler's Certification
POTENTIAL SHIFTS: 3 Shifts Available Daily: 6 am- 9am, 9am-1pm and 1pm-5pm

POSITION: Emergency Shelter Food Service Volunteer
PURPOSE OF JOB: Assist staff with preparing of breakfast
LENGTH OF COMMITMENT NECESSARY: Negotiable 3 Months
DEFINITION OF DUTIES: Prepare and serve breakfast for the homeless women and children in our emergency shelter program. Set-up dining room as well as cleaning up work and storage areas.
QUALIFICATIONS: Kitchen skills, regular volunteers must have Food Handler's Certification
POTENTIAL SHIFTS: 1 Shift Available Daily; 6am-7:30am

CHILDREN
POSITION: Chapel Child Care
PURPOSE OF JOB: Assisting infants and toddlers in child care setting
LENGTH OF COMMITMENT NECESSARY: Minimum 6 months
DEFINITION OF DUTIES: Assist the women in our rehabilitation program with caring for their babies and toddlers in our onsite child care
QUALIFICATIONS: Must be good with children.
POTENTIAL SHIFTS: Tuesday - Friday: 5:45 pm- 7:00 pm

POSITION: Tutor
PURPOSE OF JOB: Tutor School Age Children
LENGTH OF COMMITMENT NECESSARY: Minimum 3 months
DEFINITION OF DUTIES: Helping school age children, 5-12 years of age, with homework and bringing them up to their correct grade levels.
QUALIFICATIONS: Must be good with children.
POTENTIAL SHIFTS: Monday, Wednesday or Thursday: 3:45 pm- 4:45 pm

POSITION: Evening Activities Coordinator
PURPOSE OF JOB: Supervise school age children in group setting.
LENGTH OF COMMITMENT NECESSARY: Minimum 3 months
DEFINITION OF DUTIES: Plan hour-long activity i.e., arts & crafts, music lesson, board games, bible study, movie night, etc.
QUALIFICATIONS: Must be good with children.
POTENTIAL SHIFTS: Tuesday, Thursday or Friday: 5:45 pm- 7:00 pm

PROGRAM
POSITION: Drug and Alcohol Instructor
PURPOSE OF JOB: Facilitate a court order drug and alcohol class.
LENGTH OF COMMITMENT NECESSARY: Six Months
DEFINITION OF DUTIES: Teach clients about drugs education through the curriculum set by the courts.
QUALIFICATIONS: Teaching or/and counseling experience.
POTENTIAL SHIFTS: 1-3 hours per week, Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday.

RECEIVING CENTER
POSITION: Receiving Center Helper
PURPOSE OF JOB: Assist with sorting donations
LENGTH OF COMMITMENT NECESSARY: Minimum 3 months
DEFINITION OF DUTIES: Sort all incoming bags of clothes and place all other items into proper containers. Set aside request from Mission Intake Departments. Assist with other areas of the Clothing Department as needed; hanging clothes, sorting shoes, folding linen, sorting hangers. Keep the sorting area neat and organized.
QUALIFICATIONS: Ability to lift 20 pounds and stand at least part-time while working
POTENTIAL SHIFTS: 4 hour shifts, Monday - Friday: 8:30 am to 5:00 pm

POSITION: Food Recovery Center Helper
PURPOSE OF JOB: Assist with sorting of food donations
LENGTH OF COMMITMENT NECESSARY: Minimum 3 months
DEFINITION OF DUTIES: To work sorting and preparing food donations
QUALIFICATIONS: Able to determine food freshness. Bilingual in Spanish a plus!
POTENTIAL SHIFTS: 4 hour shifts, Monday - Friday: 8:30 am to 5:00 pm

POSITION: Thrift Store Helper
PURPOSE OF JOB: Assist Retail Staff
LENGTH OF COMMITMENT NECESSARY: Minimum 3 months
DEFINITION OF DUTIES: Assist retail staff by stocking shelves, sorting merchandise, pricing, cleaning, and assisting customers.
QUALIFICATIONS: Friendly personality, aware of current fashion trends, and able to be flexible in work situations
POTENTIAL SHIFTS: 3-5 hour shifts, Monday-Saturday: 9:00 am- 5:00 pm
