What if the key to healing our community lies in supporting those experiencing homelessness?

On a single night in January 2025, 9,905 people were counted as homeless in San Diego County (5,714 unsheltered and 4,191 in shelters.) Many are also facing substance use and emotional challenges.

At Mission Academy, we believe in the power of holistic, faith-based recovery. Our year-long residential program helps individuals rebuild their lives with a personalized, faith-based approach. During the critical first 30 days, students receive a Passport, a checklist of benchmarks designed to give structure, set clear goals, and guide them toward healing.

The Passport helps students take their first steps by offering accountability, encouragement, and direction. As they progress, they begin life skills classes, addiction recovery sessions, and learn tools for long-term transformation.

What Can Happen in Just One Year?

One year ago, we opened the doors of a new 30-day emergency shelter in National City. We didn’t know how many lives we could touch, but we knew God was calling us.

Today, nearly 1,000 people have found shelter, support, and hope through the South County Lighthouse. Men. Women. Moms with kids. Seniors. Veterans. People with disabilities. Families hanging on by a thread. All welcomed with dignity and care.

As our CEO Donnie Dee shared,
"We are working to get people off the streets. Anyone is welcome to stay here."

For 13 winters, Tom slept under cold stars, until one Sunday, he stepped toward a new life. A place to heal, a place called home.

When our Outreach Team met him in November 2024, he was open to prayer but hesitant to accept help.

Then one Sunday, everything changed. Tom asked about the safe emergency shelter we had mentioned. That spark of hope led to a bed, a shower, a shave, and a transformation.

Today, Tom is housed. He is reading his Bible and working with a therapist. Thanks to generous donors like you, He is rebuilding his life with strength and grace.
