The South County Lighthouse 162-bed shelter is open providing a safe space for unhoused neighbors to find rest!

"I slept so well, it took me over two hours to wake up. I feel like I just rose from the grave."

After losing his wife to cancer and spending years without a bed, this male guest at the South County Lighthouse has found a peaceful place to start his healing journey! 😊

We have already welcomed over 70 new guests since June 20, and eight have already transitioned to our 12-month residential program, Mission Academy. 🏠

"My daughter took her first steps on the floors of the Rescue Mission 20 years ago. I will be forever grateful for the Mission." 💙

Carla, a 2005 Rescue Mission graduate and long-term success story, arrived at our emergency shelter for women and children exhausted, pregnant, and hopeless. A mother of three, Carla overcame homelessness to build an abundant life with a career and restoration for her entire family.

Carla has been employed at the Mission for the past three years faithfully serving on our outreach team, actively giving back to the community. Recently promoted to Director of Outreach, she was honored with the Molina Healthcare Community Champions Award. Way to go, Carla!

Because of the love, support, and hope that you provide, graduates of our Mission Academy residential program, like Carla, receive faith-based counseling, classes, job training, and life skills to overcome trauma and thrive.

Spreading JOY, one backpack at a time! 🎒

Huge shoutout to Pura Vida for their incredible generosity! They've donated 300 backpacks and snack kits filled with essential items like food, socks, toiletries, and a beautiful Pura Vida bracelet, along with uplifting notes, for our neighbors experiencing homelessness. 🙌

Our Development team took to the streets of downtown San Diego ensuring every fresh food kit found its way to those who need it most. It was more than team building—it was about building connections and spreading joy together!🤝

💌 Include the resource card for practical help alongside your kind message. Personally hand them out to those in need.

Yvonne’s Story

Yvonne had a tumultuous past marked by childhood trauma.

At a young age, her father molested her and after she told her mother, she felt like she was blamed for her parents’ divorce. Struggling to find purpose, she turned to drugs as a means of escape. At just 16 years old, her pain was unbearable so she attempted to end her own life, resulting in a distressing stay in a psychiatric hospital for 72 hours.

Over the next 40 years, Yvonne battled substance abuse, enduring periods of homelessness and incarceration.

She was eventually introduced to the San Diego Rescue Mission through an acquaintance at church and with the therapy services provided here, she received a diagnosis of PTSD and chronic depression, marking the beginning of her healing journey.

“He gives us mercy each and every day. I’m a work in progress.” It is an ongoing journey towards wholeness, but Yvonne has found solace, support, and a renewed sense of purpose. Her desire is to serve others and spread the message of hope. She expresses profound gratitude to God.

🏟️⚾ The Padres hit a home run in community support, partnering with the San Diego Rescue Mission to tackle homelessness—a cause dear to late owner Peter Seidler's heart.

Last week, the Padres Foundation gave a generous $350,000 donation to sponsor the community center in our new 162-bed emergency shelter in National City.
