Our Ongoing Coronavirus Response

Our Point Loma Thrift Store is open. Please adhere to face covering and social distancing guidelines while shopping with us. We are now accepting drop off donations of up to 5 bags/boxes of clothing and household items, except furniture, at our Point Loma Thrift Store.

Donations can also be scheduled through our online donation pickup form. For information on donating goods at our Bread of Life Oceanside location please click here.

There’s no doubt about it. People love to shop in our thrift stores.

That’s because each of our two locations offers the best deals in town on “gently used” donated clothing, sports equipment, furniture, and other household items. Yet they offer more than that…

When you shop at our thrift stores, you also know that the money you spend supports our critical, life-saving programs. Our stores also provide our clients with job training – teaching them retail, book-keeping, and other skills they’ll use when they return as contributing members of society.

We invite you to stop by one of our locations to check out our bargains. You are also welcome to donate your items for us to sell in our stores. Stop by today!

📚 We’re Back to School! 🚍

We’re thrilled to kick off the new school year with fantastic news! Children of our amazing Mission Academy residential program students are off to a great start with 15+ enrolled in San Diego Unified School District and 8 more thriving in other districts and charter schools.

This year, our fantastic kiddos who attend Washington Elementary get an extra boost with a dedicated bus route ensuring they get to school and back safely. 🚌
At our Children’s Resource Center, we’re dedicated to supporting parents and their kids from birth to 18 with:
• 📚 School enrollment and transportation
• 💬 Ongoing in-school support
• 🏠 Parenting classes and family counseling
• 🧸 Play therapy and outdoor play facilities
• 🏥 Access to an on-site family health clinic

Former San Diego Rescue Mission guest Matthew reflects, “When I got here, I was a failure. And now I don't believe I am a failure… I am thankful for Mission Academy because they saved my life.”

Homelessness remains one of the most pressing issues facing San Diego County today.

It’s a humanitarian crisis!

In this year’s 2024 Point-in-Time Count, over 1,700 volunteers gathered data on San Diego residents living on our streets, in emergency shelters, transitional housing, or safe havens.

While it's challenging to determine the exact number, as some people reside in cars or hidden locations, volunteers identified at least 10,605 individuals experiencing homelessness across the San Diego region. This represents a 3% increase from last year. Among this count, 6,110 were found to be unsheltered, and the number of people living in their cars has surged by 44% from 2023 to 2024.

These figures are more than just statistics; each number represents a person with their own story.

⚾️ This weekend, MLB players across the league celebrated Players’ Weekend with style!
The San Diego Padres took this opportunity to highlight causes close to their hearts, reflecting the values of late Padres owner Peter Seidler and the San Diego community.

All-Star third baseman Manny Machado stepped up to the plate by rocking custom cleats featuring the San Diego Rescue Mission and our South County Lighthouse emergency shelter, the first Peter Seidler Legacy Project. The Padres Foundation and Manny Machado supported the opening of the Lighthouse with a $350,000 donation. 👟

Seniors are among the fastest-growing population becoming homeless. In 2024, over 1,800 seniors are living unsheltered in our region, an increase of 22% from last year.

Sadly, Roberta was one of those seniors until she found safety and hope at the San Diego Rescue Mission and ended her homelessness. Because of you, Roberta is far along in her path to healing! From being overcome by grief when she lost her husband, fear, and social anxiety, Roberta now feels accepted and safe. She loves to greet everyone she meets with a smile.

🌴 San Diego County is taking a step forward in the fight against homelessness!
At the 3rd Annual San Diego Rescue Mission Mayors Symposium, mayors from cities across San Diego County gathered to reaffirm their commitment to a regional approach to addressing the homelessness crisis. This year's symposium, proudly sponsored by the Rincon Tribe, focused on:
🔹 Identifying Collaborative Opportunities
🔹 Sharing Effective Initiatives
🔹 Leveraging Collective Expertise
🔹 Fostering a Unified Approach

The San Diego Rescue Mission started the Mayors Symposium in 2022 to explore strategic ways the private and public sectors could work together to change the state of homelessness in our county.

During the session, the Rescue Mission offered tools to each municipality to help engage with unsheltered people in their cities, including the use of our mobile shower trailer. It’s through building relationships with our homeless neighbors that trust is established and hope and help can be accepted.

We are grateful for the financial support of our community partner, Bo Mazzetti, Chairman of the Rincon Band of Luiseno Indians, who shared his perspective on the importance of a helping hand rather than a hand-out to compassionately provide direction to those experiencing homelessness.
